A survey by motor insurance company LV suggests that more than one million motorists have driven while over the legal alcohol limit in the last two years. In most cases people drove the morning after drinking alcohol because they didn’t realise they would still be over the limit.
Nearly half the drivers surveyed said they didn’t know how long they needed to wait after drinking before they were safe to drive.
Personal alcohol levels are in fact very difficult to work out. This is because alcohol tolerance varies from person to person and depends on a number of factors such as metabolism, weight and gender. Depending on how much you drink, you may still be over the limit many hours later or even the following day.
If you are caught driving over the limit, the Police will still prosecute even if you didn’t realise you were still over.
