M62 variable speed limits – good for road safety or a driver distraction?

The M62 Junction 25 to 30 Managed Motorway is now in force. National speed limit (70mph) applies when the managed motorway is not in operation (i.e. no speed limits displayed on the overhead gantries).

In busy periods, when the managed motorway is in operation, reduced speed limits, which are legally enforceable, will be displayed on the overhead gantries.

Operators can also set the overhead signs to close lanes if there has been an accident.

According to the Highways Agency, the new system will reduce accidents. However, variable speed limits have been criticized by some motoring experts as a distraction to drivers.
