Speed limit to be increased: change of policy or EU compliance?

In a highly unusual move, the government has said it will increase speed limits for lorries over 7.5 tonnes from 40 to 50 mph on single carriageway rural roads.

Interestingly, Ministers say the current limit is “antiquated” and that the increase will reduce accidents and ease traffic. The change runs contrary to the current trend for speed limits to be reduced and may have more to do with bringing Britain into line with Europe than a real  change in government thinking.

However, don’t rev up your lorry engine just yet – the change won’t take effect until early next year.

The government says it will also consult on increasing the speed limit for lorries on dual carriageways from 50mph to 60mph. That remains to be seen.
