Road deaths and other casualties increase

According to Department for Transport figures published this month, road deaths increased to 1,760 deaths in the year up to June 2014, an increase of 3% compared to the previous 12 months.

There were some 24,580 people killed or seriously injured on the roads  in the year ending in June 2014, a 4% increase on the previous year.

In the year ending in June 2014, there were 193,290 reported road casualties of all types,  4% higher than the previous year.

Some would argue that these figures may suggest an over-reliance on automatic traffic camera enforcement and under-reliance on active enforcement by police patrols, as well as insufficient education and training for road users, particularly newly qualified drivers.
